Anchorage Information

Courtest Anchorage Visitors' Bureau

Embraced by six mountain ranges and warmed by a maritime climate, Anchorage is a young town with a fascinating past surrounded by spectacular wilderness. In town, it has evolved into a sophisticated urban and cultural center with a lively festival and art scene. Just outside, there are mountains, wild rivers and streams, where moose, black bear and, at times, grizzly bears can be seen within the City Limits. With up to 20 hours of sunlight in Summer, the days can seem endless. Giant flowers adorn homes and storefronts, live music fills the air, sculptures appear outdoors along city blocks while king and silver salmon are caught right downtown in Ship Creek.

Climate

tempAnchorage’s Summer climate is similar to San Francisco’s spring weather, with temperatures that can reach into the 70’s. Summer highs average 65 F (18 C), while lows are a comfortable 47 F ( 8 C), with June being a bit cooler (on average, 55 F (13 C)). The sun is up almost 20 hours a day, tracing a circle in the sky, and even during the 4 hours of “night”, there is still a bright glow along the northern horizon, silhouetting the mountain peak of Denali. The clearest weather occurs in late Spring and early Summer, and although rain can happen anytime, the rainy season begins in earnest only later, in July and August.

Time Zone.

clockAnchorage is in the Alaska Time Zone, which is 1 hour behind California, 4 hours behind New York, 9 hours behind GMT in London, and 18 hours behind Japan Standard time (or 6 hours “ahead,” but on the previous day). In Summer, Daylight Savings Time is observed.

What to do in Anchorage

With almost 24 hours of daylight, there is plenty to see and do. Anchorage boasts a lively Summer arts scene, with excellent museums and cultural centers, and the city has more than its share of restaurants, with delicious salmon, halibut, king crab, and other delights from surrounding waters. Anchorage is also an excellent base for trips to the surrounding mountains, ocean inlets and glaciers.

EIPBN 26 Glacier Tour

Saturday, June 5, 2010

phillips-26-glacier-cruise

As part of our special arrangements for the 2010 3-Beams conference, Phillips Cruises is offering a specially priced day trip from Anchorage for attendees of EIPBN 2010 on Saturday, June 5, 2010. Buses will pick us up at the Hilton Anchorage 10:30am in the morning, and will take us through the Whittier Tunnel to the shore of Prince William Sound. There, we will climb aboard the Klondike Express and tour the 26 glaciers that flow into the upper reaches of Prince William Sound. Not only will we see glaciers, but in the water, it’s very common to see sea otters, seals, porpoises, sea lions and both humpback and orca whales. You may also spot bear, mountain goats and bald eagles on the shore. For an online photo tour, click here.

We hope you will be able to stay for the extra afternoon to see the amazing sights of Prince William Sound with your 3-Beams colleagues.

Kenai Fjords

For longer trips, a beautiful ride on the Alaska Railroad or a few hours drive will bring you to Seward, AK, where you can coordinate your trip into the Kenai Fjords National Park along the Gulf of Alaska. Whales, orcas, bald eagles, puffins and many other birds and sea mammals are seen from the boat trips that depart daily.

Denali (Mt. McKinley)

Denali_Mt_McKinleyFor the more adventurous, a day to the north on the Alaska Railroad or by car is Denali, the highest mountain in North America at 20,320 feet (6,193 m). Here, in Denali National Park, you can sightsee, backpack, or test your mountaineering skills while surrounded by true wilderness. Take your time to take in the vast, untouched landscape of vast mountains and rushing rivers, or test your wildlife spotting skills looking for the “Big Five”: Moose, Caribou, Dall Sheep, Wolf, and Grizzly Bear, which are plentiful in the park.
