Fundamental Challenges in Augmented Reality Display Technology
Over the past half-century, the computational revolution has evolved from corporate mainframes to mobile compute, and most recently, edge-compute with interface based on keyboard, touch screen, and voice. Many consider augmented reality to be the next leap in this evolution that will leverage this computational foundation and enable new interface modalities with immersive augmented reality experiences across sight, sound, and touch. The first step to bringing augmented reality to life is creating a high-resolution, large field-of-view near-eye display. In this course we will survey a series of Augmented Reality display architectures and the underlying technologies behind several of the display components.
About Matthew Colburn
Matthew Colburn is a technology leader with two decades of experience delivering innovative solutions at the intersection of materials, optics, and nanofabrication. In 2016, he joined Oculus Research (now Meta Reality Labs) to lead the Augmented Reality optics fabrication research. Currently, he is the research and development director responsible for computational infrastructure, design, fabrication, materials, and metrology technology for physical optics.
In 2001, he received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin developing imprint lithography technology. After graduating, Dr. Colburn joined the IBMโs Watson Research Center where he developed integration strategies for ultra-low k dielectric materials and explored novel patterning techniques. In 2005, he moved to the Advanced Lithography group eventually becoming the senior manager of IBMโs Strategic Patterning Research group responsible for materials development, computational lithography, metrology, and patterning processes, along with technology leadership for advanced device nodes. He has over 100 issued patents and co-authored over 80 publications and 2 book chapters.
