Nanotechnology for Infectious Disease Detection

Infectious diseases are circulating everywhere and every day, and we are still learning more about them. Here, I will take this opportunity to go over a few examples in detection of the disease markers, including the nucleic acids, proteins and antibodies, of Ebola virus, Zika virus, SARS-CoV-2 virus, Tuberculosis (TB), etc. We will particularly focus on some emerging technologies that are potentially more sensitive, less expensive, more portable, and faster than conventional diagnostic methods.

About Chao Wang

Chao Wang is currently an assistant professor in the School of Electrical, Computer & Energy Engineering (ECEE) at ASU. He is also affiliated with the Biodesign Center for Molecular Design & Biomimetics at ASU. Prior to joining ASU, he was a postdoctoral research scientist at IBM T.J. Watson research center from 2012 to 2015. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Jan 2012 in Princeton University working with Prof. Stephen Chou on nanotechnology. The Wang lab at ASU explores science at nanometer scale and solve biomedical problems at the interface of different disciplines and across dimensional scales. Prof. Wang’s research spans across several fields, including nanofabrication, additive manufacturing, nanomaterial synthesis, nanophotonics and metasurface, molecular fluidic dynamics, nanopore sensing, biomolecular assembly, and biomarker detection. One of his most important research goals is to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries towards developing advanced nanobiotechnologies, with a strong focus on faster, more accurate, less expensive, and more broadly accessible biosensing technologies. Prof. Wang has about 70 journal and conference publications and 25 patent and disclosures. He has multiple projects funded by government agencies and industry partners. He is also an NSF CAREER award recipient in 2019.
