Quantum Spin Defects for Sensing: Magnetic Imaging and Ion-Processed Nanoscale Platforms

This talk presents quantum sensing using NV centers in diamond and VB- centers in hBN. I will detail wide-field magnetic imaging from DC to GHz frequencies and discuss engineering nanoscale diamond membranes and 2D materials via targeted ion implantation to enable quantum platforms.

About Luca Basso

Luca Basso is currently a researcher at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) in Sandia National Labs. He joined Sandia in 2020 after receiving his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Trento (Italy) where his research focused on the fabrication of nanodiamonds through pulsed laser ablation for quantum sensing applications. While at Sandia, his work has focused on the study of color centers in diamond for quantum sensing applications, and the use of ion implantation for development of novel platforms for quantum technologies. Recently his interests expanded into color centers in 2D materials and in the use of focused ion beam for nano engineering of quantum defects.

Murat’s Ph.D. work received multiple recognitions, including the Emil Wolf Outstanding Student Paper Award from OPTICA (2020), the Laser Technology, Engineering, and Applications Scholarship from SPIE (2022), the Boris P. Stoicheff Memorial Scholarship from OPTICA (2022), and the CREOL Student of the Year Award (2022). He has co-authored over 50 journal articles and 3 patents.
